The NFL has donated $30 million to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, the largest donation the foundation has ever received, the league announced Wednesday. The funds will be used for medical and scientific research on brain injuries. From the NFL’s press release:

Specific plans for the research will remain to be developed, but potential areas under discussion include accelerating the pace of discovery to support the most innovative and promising science of the brain, including: chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE); concussion management and treatment; and the understanding of the potential relationship between traumatic brain injury and late-life neurodegenerative disorders, especially Alzheimer’s disease.
The release also notes that portions of the funding could be used to research sudden cardiac death and heat/hydration-related illness or death, particularly in young athletes; joint problems that result from sports injuries; chronic pain; and potential health side-effects from using performance-enhancing substances. The donation comes in the wake of increasing public pressure, including from former players, for the NFL to do more to prevent and treat concussions.
