Most teams use their international friendly dates to accomplish something from a footballing standpoint. Whether they play a team similar to upcoming opponents in competitive matches or test themselves against a top team, there's usually some kind of goal in mind. Spain's goal seems to be to go to cool places and make money.
Spain Vs. Saudi Arabia: Because La Roja Will Play Anyone
No one can tell you why this is a thing.
Last international break, La Roja played an odd international friendly in Puerto Rico, at the Islanders’ stadium. Spain, the reigning World Cup and European champions, played in a U.S. second division stadium. This week, they’re playing Saudi Arabia at home in the 12,000 seat Estadio Municipal de Pasaron, home to Tercera Division side Pontevedra CF.
Presumably, Vicente del Bosque will use this opportunity to play a mix of first-choice players to warm up for Spain’s qualifier against Georgia and fringe players who could conceivably do a job for him. He could have done this against any team, in any stadium. This game is dumb.
