Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie has spent over a month on the disabled list after suffering an oblique injury in a game against the Oakland Athletics August 3.

He completed a three-game rehab assignment Thursday by playing in the Midwest League Lansing Lugnuts’ playoff game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. (Don’t you love minor-league team nicknames?) Lawrie went 3-for-4 with a triple as the Lugnuts were eliminated from the playoffs.

Friday, Lawrie will return to the Jays:

Lawrie was having a good first full season with Toronto, hitting .282/.326/.416 with nine home runs in 100 games. The tweet notes that catcher J.P. Arencibia, who has been out since July 25 with a broken hand, will also return to the Blue Jays, who have been decimated by injuries both to position players and pitchers this year. Teams don't like to use injuries as an excuse for not winning, but if any team has justification for doing so, it's the 2012 Blue Jays.
