Angel Di Maria opened the scoring just two minutes into the match with a great individual effort, completely throwing Paraguay off their counter-attacking gameplan. Incredibly, they were able to get back into the match thanks to a handball in the box by Rodrigo Braña, which gifted Paraguay a penalty. That was one of very few significant chances for Paraguay, and Argentina quickly went back to dominating the game. They reclaimed the lead 13 minutes later. with Gonzalo Higuain putting his side back on top.
Lionel Messi hit the post with a free kick shortly afterwards, but he had better luck with a similar free kick in the second half. He converted a stellar free kick goal in the 63rd minute, solidifying Argentina's lead and ensuring their victory.
