Phil Jones has undergone surgery on his knee and will miss up to eight weeks as a result. The Englishman injured his knee in training and will have to wait even longer now to make his season debut.

"Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation," Manchester United said in a statement.

The defender has not played a match this season after injuring his back in the preseason. He returned to training and his back was deemed fine, but now the knee is a problem. If the projected timeline for his recovery hold true, he will return to the field at the end of October or beginning of November.

Making matters worse for United is the broken metatarsal that is keeping Chris Smalling out. That, along with injuries to Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand has left Sir Alex Ferguson short on options in central defense. The result has been Michael Carrick as a defender, but Evans and Ferdinand are now back and healthy again.
