Jared Barnett, former starting QB, leaving Iowa State

Quarterback Jared Barnett, who led Iowa State to an upset over No. 2 Oklahoma State in 2011, is moving on from the Cyclones.

Iowa State quarterback Jared Barnett has decided to transfer, head coach Paul Rhoads announced Friday.

Barnett started nine games in two years for the Cylcones, but he lost his starting job twice in 2012, and by the end of the season, he had fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart behind redshirt freshman Sam Richardson and senior Steele Jantz. In his career at Ames, Barnett completed 49.4 percent of his passes for 1,825 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The highlight of Barnett’s Iowa State career came on Nov. 18, 2011, when the Cyclones upset then-No. 2 Oklahoma State, 37-31, in double overtime. Barnett completed 31-of-58 passes for 376 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, and he rushed 14 times for 84 yards. He rallied his team from a 24-7 second-half deficit, as Iowa State knocked the Cowboys out of the national championship race.

Barnett is a rising redshirt junior, and per NCAA rules, he’ll have to sit out one season if he transfers to another FBS school.
