Long-time NFL head coach Dick Vermeil is stepping out of retirement to coach the National team in the 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The exhibition game brings together college football players from across the country who will try to showcase their skills for NFL scouts.

Two-time NFL Coach of the Year Dick Vermeil is coming out of retirement briefly to coach in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl next weekend.

Vermeil got his head coaching start with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976, and he helped lead the franchise to an appearance in Super Bowl XV. While he would not win an NFL title on that occasion, he'd get a second opportunity later in his career. Vermeil took the St. Louis Rams head coaching job in 1997 after a long tenure as a football broadcaster and in 1999 his team won the NFC and Super Bowl XXXIV.
He walked away from coaching after that championship victory, but he wasn't out of the game long, as he accepted an offer to coach the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2001 season. When he retired for good after the 2005 season, he'd won a total of 126 games over the course of his pro head coaching career, including six playoff victories.
Now he’ll be lending that experience and expertise to a bunch of young players hoping to make an impact in the NFL. The Collegiate Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 19 in Los Angeles, California.
