With the second round of the 2013 Australian Open under way, there were few surprises near the top of the rankings in the first round on both the men’s and women’s sides, though hopes for a strong American presence in the later rounds took another hit.
Australian Open 2013 results: USA’s Brian Baker withdraws due to injury
After suffering a right knee injury, Baker was forced to retire from his second-round match against American Sam Querrey, who is the USA’s only seeded player heading to the third round.

Brian Baker, due to a right knee injury that forced him off the court, had to withdraw in the second set of his match against Sam Querrey, also from the USA. This makes Querrey, ranked No. 20 for the tournament, the lone seeded American in the third round of play. Baker was later diagnosed with a torn lateral meniscus, according to an ESPN report.
Elsewhere on the men’s side Tuesday, No. 3 Andy Murray of Great Britain defeated Robin Haase of the Netherlands in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. Second-seeded Roger Federer did the same to France’s Benoit Paire, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
On the women’s side, third-seeded Serena Williams tweaked an ankle but dominated Edina Gallovits-Hall nonetheless, 6-0, 6-0. Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka had little problems as well, defeating Monica Niculescu, 6-1, 6-4.
