East-West Shrine Game 2013: West leads East 21-3 at halftime

The West scored two touchdowns in a 15 second stretch at the end of the second quarter to build a big lead over the East, who have struggled to do much on offense.

USA TODAY Sports

It's been a disjointed first 30 minutes at the 2013 East-West Shrine Game, but the West scored two touchdowns in 15 seconds near the end of the half to take a 21-3 halftime lead. Middle Tennessee State's Anthony Amos scored on a three yard end around less than four minutes into the game, and the East team added a field goal from Florida's Caleb Sturgis with just under two minutes left in the half to make it 7-3. However, less than a minute later, Arizona's Matt Scott hit Mississippi State's Chad Bumphis for 57 yard touchdown pass, and just a few seconds later, Kansas State's Nigel Malone picked off Louisiana Tech's Colby Cameron and brought it back 30 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-3.

Both offenses have struggled for most of the first half, particularly the quarterbacks. Kansas State's Collin Klein and Texas Tech's Seth Doege got to start the game, and neither one did very much with their time. Klein finished the game 3-6 for 19 yards, and Doege was 3-6 for 28 yards. Neither one threw a touchdown or an interception.

When Scott took over for Doege, the offense began to move a little better. Louisiana Tech’s Colby Cameron took over for Klein in the second quarter, and both Cameron and Scott are still in the game.

Christine Michael (Texas A&M) is the West's leading rusher with 28 yards on nine carries. Kerwynn Williams (Utah State) has 23 yards on four carries. Bumphis is the West's leading receiver with 80 yards and a touhdown on three catches.

Klein is the East’s leading rusher with 13 yards on three carries. Corey Fuller (Virginia Tech) is the team’s leading receiver with 29 yards on two receptions.

Defensively, South Carolina’s Devin Taylor has stood out for the East team with a forced fumble.
