NFLPA Collegiate Bowl: Dayne Crist throws, runs for touchdown in first half

Dayne Crist led the National team on two touchdown drives, as they entered the half of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl up 17-0.

USA TODAY Sports

Dayne Crist was the star early in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, throwing for one touchdown and scoring another on a sneak as the National team entered the half up 17-0.

Both teams traded punts in the first quarter, as Vanderbilt's Jordan Rodgers - brother of Aaron, and considered amongst the best prospects in the game - only completed three passes and the National team couldn't move the ball on theground.

However, that changed when Crist took over at quarterback, subbing in for Washington State's Jeff Tuel. Crist, the quarterback who followed Charlie Weis from Notre Dame to Kansas, completed his first three passes on a drive that eventually went 84 yards, with D.J. Monroe of Texas and Eric Stephens Jr. of Texas Tech busting out big runs. The drive finished with a Crist score on a one-yard QB sneak.

The American team’s next drive went backwards, and a bad punt gave Crist’s team good field position. They’d move the ball easily, scoring on a seven-yard play action pass from Crist to Rice tight end Luke Wilson.

A final drive with Fordham's Ryan Higgins at the helm would get the National team into field goal range, but he'd throw three incompletions, allowing South Carolina's Adam Yates to drill a field goal.
