Remembering “New” Fenway Park

Over the weekend, the Cubs announced their plans for renovating Wrigley Field (photo gallery here). In short, the North Siders propose to make piecemeal improvements to the old park over the course of several offseasons, much like the recently completed and much-ballyhooed Fenway Park face-lift.

But in 1999, a different Red Sox owner proposed a very different idea: A “new” Fenway Park, right next to the old one, paid for by taxpayers, built on land seized via eminent domain.

Despite nonsensical arguments from the party to tear down Fenway (“They can’t keep patching it. It can’t be rebuilt on that swamp. They can’t clean it.”), wiser heads prevailed, and the Fenway renovation will serve as a model to the Cubs and Dodgers as they revamp their old ballparks.

But it’s worth remembering that 14 years ago, at the tail end of the internet bubble, the owner of the Boston Red Sox nearly destroyed Fenway Park and replaced it with this piece of crap:
