2013 Senior Bowl: Pat White appears with renewed NFL hopes

Pat White’s NFL career flamed out after one season, but the former Miami Dolphins quarterback wants another chance.

Pat White, a former record-setting quarterback at West Virginia, is trying to get back in the NFL. He was a controversial second-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2009, and he lasted just one season in Miami. Now, according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, White says he's mentally prepared and still physically able to give pro football another shot.

White is currently in his native city of Mobile, Ala., meeting with NFL coaches and executives who are in town for the Senior Bowl. He says he’s just trying to convince them that he’s ready for another chance:

“I’m still young. My legs are still with me,” he said Monday at the Senior Bowl. “I’m like a 2009 model with about 4,500 miles on it. It still runs just as smooth.”

White didn’t have an impact in his one season with the Dolphins, failing to complete a pass on five attempts and rushing 21 times for 81 yards. He takes full responsibility for his lost season:

“Everyone wants to point fingers as to why it didn’t work out in the NFL. I felt it was because of me,” he said. “I could’ve done a lot more film study, a lot more working on my game. Instead of being there 30 minutes after practice, be there an hour. It’s the little things.

“I understand now that I was disrespectful, very disrespectful, to the gifts that I was given. I wasn’t as focused as I should have been, and I took my gifts for granted. Now that I know that, it won’t happen again.”

This may be the perfect time for White to make another run at the NFL. The mobile quarterback who can run a spread offense is en vogue right now, and even his size concerns -- he's listed at 6'0 and 190 pounds -- are quelled a bit by the success of Seattle's Russell Wilson, who is just 5'11 and 206 pounds.

Second chances at a professional sports career don’t come often, but White appears to be ready for another opportunity.
