Bills WR Stevie Johnson wants quarterback competition in Buffalo

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson believes competition would do quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick some good.

With a new coaching staff and a new era in Buffalo underway, Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson would like to see quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick face some competition for his starting job, according to the Buffalo News's Tim Graham. Fitzpatrick hasn't faced a real threat since becoming the starter in early during the 2010 season.

It’s not that Johnson doesn’t believe Fitzpatrick is the right man for the job; he just believes the push from a legitimate contender would raise the quarterback’s play to another level:

“Because competition brings out the best in us,” Johnson said. “If we went out and got another quarterback, who knows what’ll happen? Fitz may still win, or the other guy may win. Let it happen like that.

“I’m a guy that’s about competing. Bring whoever you want in and the better man will win. So be it.”

While Fitzpatrick has played well at times for the Bills, he has often made too many mistakes. Since taking over in Buffalo, the seventh-year veteran has thrown for at least 3,000 yards in three straight seasons and has 71 touchdown passes, but he’s also thrown 54 interceptions during that time.

Johnson believes Fitzpatrick may keep the starting job, even if he’s forced to fight for it. Either way, the receiver believes competition at the offense’s most important position can’t hurt:

“He is a good quarterback. We’ve all seen that. Obviously, they may bring somebody else in. I just hope it leads to competition. I think Fitz is one of those competitors. He may come out with the job again.”
