Cowboys remove playcalling duties from Jason Garrett

Head coach Jason Garrett won’t be running the Cowboys’ offense in 2013.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

After another disappointing season that left the Dallas Cowboys watching the NFL playoffs on TV, head coach Jason Garrett has been stripped of his offensive playcalling duties, according to ESPN Dallas's Calvin Watkins. Offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, who was hired before the 2012 season, will take over.

49ers-Cowboys disparity: All about coaching?

Garrett, who served as offensive coordinator in Dallas from 2007-2010, took over as interim head coach in the middle of the 2010 season following the firing of Wade Phillips. After leading the Cowboys to a 5-3 record over their final eight games, the “interim” was dropped from his title. But since then, Dallas has compiled two consecutive 8-8 records and failed to reach the playoffs.

The Cowboys ranked sixth in the NFL this season with 374.6 yards per game, but their 23.5 points per game ranked 15th. Dallas ranked 20th in the league in red zone touchdown percentage, finding the end zone on just 51 percent of its drives that reached the opponents’ 20-yard line.

Callahan served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2002-03 and Nebraska Cornhuskers from 2004-07. Before his time as a head coach, Callahan was the Raiders' offensive coordinator from 1998-2001. In 2001, Oakland ranked seventh in the NFL with 335.1 yards per game and fourth with 24.9 points per game.
