Lance Berkman nearing contract with Rangers, according to report

The Rangers are close to bringing Lance Berkman aboard to help fill the void in their lineup left by the departure of Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and Michael Young.

Jeff Curry-US PRESSWIRE

The Texas Rangers are in the process of finalizing a one-year deal with free agent first baseman/outfielder Lance Berkman, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal. It will be worth in the area of $10-$11 million.

The monetary terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed, but the inclusion of a vesting option is a possibility, notes Rosenthal. The addition of Berkman will help shore up the Rangers' lineup, which lost Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli via free agency and Michael Young via trade.

Berkman, 36, missed 130 games in 2012 with a knee injury and publicly mulled retirement during the rehab process. Still, Berkman managed a .381 on-base percentage in his limited action with the St. Louis Cardinals.

2011 was a banner year for the Big Puma, as he hit .301/.412/.547 with 31 home runs, a resurgence in production that Berkman hadn't seen since 2008 while with the Houston Astros.

Over the course of a 14-year big-league career, Berkman has posted a 146 OPS+ and has hit 360 homers.
