Alabama makes Sports Illustrated cover after pounding Notre Dame

The Crimson Tide will have all offseason to let the S.I. cover curse wear off.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated following their dominating victory over Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship Game on Monday night. The picture (seen above), which shows Alabama's Eddie Lacy towering over two helpless Irish defenders, perfectly encapsulates the lopsided result.

The Crimson Tide are no strangers to the cover of Sports Illustrated, as they have been featured by the publication 17 times since 1966, according to the S.I. Vault. That bests their national championship total, which now stands at 15.

Sports Illustrated went with the title “Rule Tide,” which may fall only second in the race for best pun title to the Times-Journal’s “Miami Ice” BCS Championship newspaper headline.

Alabama certainly did rule the Irish, putting up 42 points and gaining 529 total yards against a previously stout defense. 265 of those yards were picked up on the ground, as the Crimson Tide gashed Notre Dame for 5.9 yards per carry, even as the run was expected with the game out of hand by halftime.
