Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray, who took the loss in Game 5 of the ALDS against Detroit, broke his thumb during the game on Thursday night, according to Joe Stiglich of Comcast Sports California. He will have an MRI on Friday.

Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray suffered a broken thumb while fielding a ball in the last game of the 2013 ALDS.
Gray pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three in the losing effort.
Stiglich does not specify when the injury occurred, but describes it as a "hard comebacker" which Gray fielded. If that is accurate, it is likely that Gray injured his thumb in the fifth inning when he fielded a hard-hit, one-hop grounder off the bat of Prince Fielder for the final out of the inning.
Gray was unable to come up with the ball cleanly, knocking down before throwing to first to end the inning.
Gray went on to start the sixth inning, but allowed the first two batters to single and was pulled in favor of Dan Otero. One of the base runners Otero inherited eventual scored on Omar Infante’s RBI ground out.
Gray was one of the top rookie pitchers in 2013, going 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 games, including 10 starts, for Oakland after being called up in July.
