Pascal Bosschaart cut by Sydney FC

The aging defender simply could not recover from recurring achilles tendon injuries and surgeries.

Sydney FC today cut Pascal Bosschaart to free up a visa roster spot. The 33-year-old defender joined Sydney in 2011 after fourteen years in Holland with Utrecht, Feyenoord and Den Haag. Yet after playing 27 games with the Sky Blues in 2011/12, injuries stole most of the rest of his tenure in Sydney. Bosschaart played just six times last season after recovering from his achilles injury and had not seen the field in either of Sydney’s first two games this year.

Manager Frank Farina explained the move in FourFourTwo Australia:

”This is not the way we would have liked to have dealt with it, mostly because we were really hopeful that he would get back out there. Pascal has done everything right and has tried to get himself back to full fitness, but he’s obviously still injured and it’s been a tough road after doing his achilles twice...We’ll honor Pascal’s contract, but this is a business and sometimes you need to make some difficult decisions. This is one of those.

“We’re in a situation where we need to have players who are available and ready. We need all hands on deck...We still do have a little bit of salary cap space left and this certainly gives us some room to move if we want a good visa player.”

After defeating Newcastle Jets 2-0 in the A-League’s season opener, Sydney crashed back to the pack with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium over the weekend with Alessandro Del Piero leaving injured in the first half.
