William Gallas agrees to provisional terms for Perth Glory move

Longtime Premier League and France defender will join Perth on a one-year contract, according to a club press release.

William Gallas, who was earlier linked with Melbourne Victory, has agreed to provisional terms on a one-year contract with Perth Glory. The 36-year-old has been out of contract since finishing the 2012/13 season with Tottenham Hotspur, his twelfth season in the English Premier League. Football Central broke the news overnight and the Glory confirmed the provisional agreement via press release.

The press release begins:

"Perth Glory can confirm that former Chelsea and Arsenal captain William Gallas has agreed provisional terms to join the club this season as their international marquee player on a one-year deal."

Though the deal does not seem to be complete, the club have shared the news so there is certainly an expectation on their part that the medical and final paperwork are mere formalities at this point. Glory CEO Jason Brewer and Head of the A-League, Damien de Bohun, also gave cliched statements in the press release, lending legitimacy to the deal.

Gallas was quoted in the press release, saying:

”After speaking to Alistair Edwards and Jason Brewer, the passion and ambition in the voices of both gentlemen enticed me to this new challenge in Australia. I look forward to wearing with pride the jersey of Perth Glory for this season.

“I hope to help my new teammates and club achieve success in this season and hope to deliver to the fans of Perth the championship they are looking for. I look forward to this new challenge and hope to excite the fans.”

The longtime French international would be the first French player in the A-League. Perth picked up its first point of the 2013/14 campaign in a 0-0 draw at Newcastle Jets over the weekend. The Glory have yet to play a home game this season.
