Brent McGrath pens short-term deal with Adelaide United

The 22-year-old forward will take Bruce Djite’s place on the roster for four weeks, after which the club will reevaluate his status.

Brent McGrath has landed an A-League contract, albeit a short-term one, signing today with Adelaide United. The 22-year-old has been added to the Reds’ roster for an initial four week basis, replacing Bruce Djite who has a lingering ankle injury.

McGrath, who has been at Danish club Brøndby since the 2009/10 season, initially came to Australia to go on trial with Melbourne Victory. But most recently, Josep Gombau worked him out in Adelaide and gave the young forward a chance to start in the club’s final two pre-season games. He played a productive hour against Melbourne Heart in Epping and another 70 minutes in the pre-season finale at AAMI Park against the Victory on Thursday. The Adelaide manager liked what he saw enough to ink a quick deal with McGrath with an eye toward a longer-term contract in the future.

Said Gombau in a club press release:

“Brent has impressed in the two pre-season games he’s played and he has over 40 games of first team experience with one of the best clubs in Denmark. He’s only 22 years of age and can play as a center forward or out wide, so we think there is a lot of upside to him.”

Michael Petrillo, Adelaide’s General Manager of Football Operations, added that McGrath could be signed to a season-long deal if his four-game run goes well, and would replace Teeboy Kamara on the roster. United host Perth Glory (October 13) and Melbourne Victory (October 18) to start the season before traveling for tough games at Central Coast Mariners (October 26) and Western Sydney Wanderers (November 1).
