Melbourne Victory have today announced the signing of Rashid Mahazi on a free transfer from Victorian Premier League side Northcote City. The 21-year-old midfielder had been on trial with the club in Tasmania and came on as a substitute as recently as Thursday’s closed-door friendly against Adelaide United.
Melbourne Victory add Rashid Mahazi to talented midfield
The former Northcote City player moves up from the Victorian Premier League after a successful trial.

Victory’s offseason recruitments have been limited but filled with big names, including luring Mitch Nichols from Brisbane Roar, bringing Kosta Barbarouses back to the A-League and signing Pablo Contreras and James Troisi. Mahazi’s signing is not on that level, but it does give Ange Postecoglou additional cover in midfield and brings a local player up from the VPL into the A-League.
Postecoglou explained the signing in a club press release:
“Rashid’s performances throughout the pre-season have been very promising and we are looking forward to seeing him further develop as he spends more time with the squad in the lead-up to the season. We see him as a player with plenty of upside and someone that can fit well into our structures while also providing us with further depth in midfield.”
The Victory open the 2013/14 season at the Etihad Stadium against Melbourne Heart on Saturday October 12.
