Dolphins GM allegedly suggested Jonathan Martin confront Richie Incognito

A call between Jonathan Martin’s agent and the Dolphins general manager is reportedly the next chapter in a series of unfortunate events in Miami.

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland allegedly suggested that offensive lineman Jonathan Martin accost tormenting teammate Richie Incognito, per a report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

Per multiple league sources, Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland received a call from Martin’s agent, Rick Smith, before Martin left the team on October 28. Smith complained to Ireland about the manner in which Incognito was treating Martin.

Ireland, according to the sources, suggested to Smith that Martin physically confront Incognito. Ireland specifically mentioned that Martin should “punch” Incognito.

Ireland’s alleged involvement adds another layer to this Dolphins saga, which included the suspension of Incognito, who is reportedly “done” in Miami.

Martin left the team on Oct. 28 and complained to the team about bullying by Incognito, including a threatening voicemail in April. A report in the Miami Sun-Sentinel on Tuesday said Dolphins coaches encouraged Incognito to toughen up Martin after Martin missed two days of voluntary offseason workouts.

The Dolphins through a team spokesman declined comment on Florio’s report. The incident is still under review by the NFL.
