Gregg Williams is getting a second chance in the NFL as Tennessee Titans senior assistant defensive coach. After sitting out the 2012 season for his role in the New Orleans Saints' Bountygate, Williams was reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell last week and hired by the Titans. Now, Tennessee head coach Mike Munchak says Williams will be a "huge asset" to the Titans.

Despite Gregg Williams’s role in Bountygate, Titans head coach Mike Munchak is pleased to have him on Tennessee’s defensive staff.

Munchak recently made an appearance on the 3HL show on WGFX in Nashville, and he discussed the decision to hire Williams and what the new defensive assistant will bring to the team:
“I think Gregg’s gonna be involved in everything we do. I think it’s going to be a group effort. I think you’re going to see his influence in a lot of areas. ... He’s speaking up in [meetings] already. ... I think having another set of eyes that has a lot of experience is going to be very helpful to our team, so I think you’ll see him involved in a lot of ways, with Jerry, with game-planning. Certainly he’ll take a certain aspect of the game plan - whether it be third down or red zone or something - where he’ll be in charge of a few things. And like I said, he’ll sit in meeting rooms and help other areas. So I’m excited. There’s a lot he can do. He’s obviously a great resource for that area, and I think once we get rolling he’s excited to work, and I think he’s going to be a huge asset for us.”
Williams has been in the NFL since 1990, a stretch that includes a head coaching gig with the Buffalo Bills from 2001-03. He spent a decade with the Titans franchise, serving as a defensive assistant from 1990-96 while the team was in Houston and moving up to defensive coordinator when the franchise relocated to Nashville in 1997. He has also served as defensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Saints.
Williams was hired as the St. Louis Rams' defensive coordinator on Feb. 3, 2012, but his suspension prevented him from ever coaching a game in St. Louis.
The Titans are desperate for improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Tennessee allowed 374.9 yards per game in 2012, which ranked 27th in the NFL. The team was last in scoring defense, giving up 29.4 points per contest.
