South African police have taken Oscar Pistorius, the sprinter with prosthetic blade-like legs, into custody after a woman was found shot dead in his Pretoria home, reports The New York Times. The woman is reported to be Reeva Steenkamp, a model who was seen socially with Pistorius.

Oscar Pistorius, who captured the world’s fancy as “Blade Runner” during the 2012 Olympics, has been taken into custody. A woman’s death at his home is being investigated as a homicide.

Pistorius, known widely as Blade Runner, captured the public’s attention during the 2012 London Olympics after reaching the semifinal of the 400-meter sprint on prosthetics. He also competed in the 4x400 meter relay for the South Africa team, and months later won three medals at the 2012 Paralympics, also in London. Pistorius also starred in a widely seen Nike ad campaign.
A police spokesman said there had previous calls from Pistorius’ home relating to domestic issues, The Times reported. Pistorius has not yet been formally charged with Steenkamp’s murder, but police acknowledged that a murder investigation has been open and that they plan to oppose any attempts for bail made by Pistorius.
