Chiefs could franchise Dwayne Bowe again, according to Adam Schefter

The Kansas City Chiefs are considering placing the franchise tag on wide receiver Dwayne Bowe for the second year in a row.

USA TODAY Sports

Eager to keep Dwayne Bowe but wary of signing him to a long-term deal, the Kansas City Chiefs are considering placing the franchise tag on their wide receiver for the second straight year, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

After franchising Bowe last offseason, the Chiefs payed the five-year veteran out of LSU just over $9.5 million in 2012. Should the team place the franchise tag on Bowe again, it would owe him more than $11 million for the 2013 season. That isn’t cheap, but it’s certainly cheaper -- and less risky -- than locking the receiver up to a multi-year deal.

Bowe has played his entire NFL career in Kansas City after the Chiefs selected him with the 23rd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. During his time in K.C., he has compiled 5,728 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns. The 2012 season was a bit of a down year for Bowe, as he caught 59 passes for 801 yards and three TDs, failing to reach the 1,000-yard plateau for the first time since 2009.

The Chiefs are coming off a dismal 2-14 season and will have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. Almost the entire team needs work, so it’s understandable that Kansas City isn’t ready to part with one of its best contributors.
