NFL Combine 2013: Andy Reid says Chiefs would trade 1st draft pick

In an NFL Scouting Combine interview, new coach Andy Reid discussed his options for the April draft

The Kansas City Chiefs have the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft for the first time in franchise history. With the world as their oyster come April, new head coach Andy Reid says the team is open to a trade. "We're going to evaluate everything," says the man who coached in five consecutive NFC Championship games with the Eagles. "We're just not going to give it away. It's a pretty valuable pick."

The consensus No. 1 prospect among scouts right now is Texas A&M offensive lineman Luke Joeckel. When asked about the left tackle, Reid referred to Joeckel as “a good football player” but emphasized that he hasn’t had a chance to look at all of the available players. The new coach also mentioned looking forward to meeting the former Aggie.

With the 2011 collective bargaining agreement limiting the salaries of first-year players, the top selections have arguably become more valuable. For example, the Redskins traded three first-round and one second-round pick to St. Louis for the rights to the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft. Washington used this pick on Robert Griffin III, who led the Redskins to the playoffs and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. The Chiefs could get a similar haul, with the caveat that there doesn’t appear to be a franchise-level quarterback available and teams may not be as anxious to move into the top slot.

The Chiefs finished 2-14 last season, locking up the first overall pick because they held the tiebreaker over the similarly 2-14 Jacksonville Jaguars. Kansas City cleaned house after the disappointing season, firing GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel. Reid takes over as coach and head of football operations, following 14 seasons in Philadelphia as coach of the Eagles.
