Jimmie Johnson wins the 2013 Daytona 500

Jimmie Johnson held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. at the wire on Sunday, taking the checkered flag in the 2013 Daytona 500. Earnhardt Jr. finished second, running out of room as he tried to chase down Johnson on the last lap. Danica Patrick, who ran in the top 10 all day, finished eighth after losing ground on the last lap.

The Daytona 500 started slow enough, with drivers content to wait things out in the early going. A wreck on lap 32 was our first real action of the day, as numerous cars got caught up in the mess, leading to the second caution of the 500 -- the first was a debris caution just before the crash.

Coming out of the caution, drivers again slid back into a single-file order, ticking off laps with little in the way of action. The race was humming along until a second crash with just over 60 laps to go, taking out Trevor Bayne and Carl Edwards, among others.

A late debris caution with less than 10 laps to go bunched the field back up again, setting up a sprint to the finish. Drivers had been running two- and three-wide before the caution, led by Brad Keselowski, when it appeared that a piece of debris hit the 2 car.

Jimmie Johnson led them out of the caution as Keselowski got lost in the wash on the low line. Johnson was followed by Greg Biffle, Patrick and Earnhardt Jr., each of whom struggled to find a hole to attack.

Earnhardt Jr. finally dove down low on the last lap, pulling up almost next to Johnson as they reached the tri-oval. He ran out of real estate, though, as Johnson took the win.
