NFL free agency rumors: Colts interested in Chargers guard Louis Vasquez

Louis Vasquez is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Indianapolis Colts would like to add the guard to their offensive line.

Ron Schwane-US PRESSWIRE

The Indianapolis Colts are interested in signing San Diego Chargers guard Louis Vasquez, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Vasquez is set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 12.

Vasquez just completed his fourth season in the NFL, and he has been an anchor on the Chargers’ offensive line ever since the team selected him in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The Texas Tech product has made 54 starts in his career, including 16 in 2012.

Standing 6'5 and weighing in at 335 pounds, Vasquez would certainly bring size and experience to the Colts' line. With quarterback Andrew Luck being the most important piece to the franchise, having a stellar offensive line will always be a need in Indy. Over at Stampede Blue, SB Nation's Colts blog, Josh Wilson writes that signing Vasquez would be a huge move for Indianapolis:

Not only would he fill the biggest position of need for the Colts, but Vasquez would immediately become the largest and best lineman on the Colts. He is a great fit for Pep Hamilton’s offensive system and is a great talent - who, as Brad pointed out, is only 25 years old. Offensive guard is the biggest position of need for the Colts, as protecting Andrew Luck is priority number one, and Vasquez is a very good pass blocker.

The Colts’ offensive line wasn’t good in 2012. Indianapolis allowed 41 sacks, which ranked 23rd in the league, and the 116 quarterback hits were second-most in the NFL. In the running game, the team averaged just 3.8 yards per carry, which ranked 24th.
