Fred Davis injury update: Redskins TE will be ready for OTAs

Washington tight end Fred Davis is recovering nicely from an Achilles injury.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis, who ruptured his Achilles tendon during a game against the New York Giants on Oct. 21, is healing well and should be 100 percent for organized team activities, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Davis missed the Redskins' final nine regular-season games and their first-round playoff defeat at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. In seven games with Washington last season, he caught 24 passes for 325 yards. In his career with the Redskins, Davis has 155 catches for 1,973 yards and 12 touchdowns.

While Davis may be ahead of schedule in his recovery, the injury still leaves the Redskins with a tough decision on what to do with their tight end. The 2012 season was the third in his five-year career in which he played 12 games or fewer. Davis is set to become a free agent on March 12, and the Redskins have to decide how he fits into their long-term plans.

If they can’t work out a new deal, the ‘Skins could place the franchise tag on Davis, which would pay him roughly $6.5 million next season. That may be too expensive for a player that has missed quite a bit of time during his career.
