Blaine Taylor fired as Old Dominion coach after 12 seasons

Old Dominion’s longtime head coach, Blaine Taylor, is on the way out in the midst of a 2-20 season. That might not have been what did Taylor in.

Old Dominion announced the firing of head coach Blaine Taylor at a Tuesday press conference, hours after multiple reports, helpfully compiled by our Mid-Major Madness indicated the school’s all-time leader in men’s basketball wins would be let go.

Taylor has been Old Dominion’s head coach since 2001, and led the Monarchs to four NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT Semifinals in his 12 seasons with the team. Old Dominion made the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, earning the program’s third NCAA Tournament victory and first since 1995 by upsetting Notre Dame, and lost to eventual championship game loser Butler on a tip-in in its first game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Taylor was known as a somewhat abrasive coach, and Old Dominion athletic director Wood Selig indicated that his firing might not be related solely to the Monarchs’ 2-20 record in 2012-13 at the brief press conference telling reporters the decision was “not based solely on wins and losses” and “citing an ‘institutional personnel issue’.“

Old Dominion assistant coach Jim Corrigan will replace Taylor on an interim basis.
