Tyren Jones signs with Alabama over Georgia

The Crimson Tide picked up a solid running back in Tyren Jones

Streeter Lecka

Longtime Alabama commit Tyren Jones made his pledge to the Crimson Tide official Wednesday, as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Nick Saban’s team.

Jones is a consensus four-star running back out of Marietta, Ga., Walton High School. Aside from Alabama and Georgia, he had 10 other offers from schools, including four from the SEC: Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. He also received interest from other big names such as Clemson, North Carolina and Oklahoma State. Jones made his commitment to the Tide nearly a year ago on Feb. 21, 2012.

Jones stands 5’8 and he weighs in at 202 pounds. He is tabbed as the No. 6 player in the state of Georgia and the No. 8 running back in the Class of 2013, according to 247Sports’s composite rankings, and he was a 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection.

Jones has the quickness and power to give Alabama solid production out of the backfield. He suffered a knee injury late in the 2012 season, but that shouldn’t be a concern going forward. The Crimson Tide have had several great running backs in recent seasons, and Jones is a candidate to live up to that legacy.

Ratings: Consensus four-star

Vitals: 5’8, 202 pounds

Other offers: Georgia, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia

Recruitment timeline: Jones committed to Alabama on Feb. 21, 2012. He made two unofficial visits to Tuscaloosa during the 2012 season and visited officially on Jan. 11, 2013.
