Honda Classic 2013 leaderboard: Luke Guthrie leads, Tiger Woods fights for cut

Luke Guthrie, in his first full year playing professionally, leads the Honda Classic, while Tiger Woods can’t fall off his current pace if he wants to make the cut.

Thanks to a strong second round, Luke Guthrie is gunning for his first career PGA Tour win after climbing the leaderboard to 9-under at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Guthrie, a 22-year-old who turned professional out of the University of Illinois last year, made his mark on the Web.com Tour by winning back-to-back events last September, but this is his strongest showing yet on the big stage. He entered the day at 2-under, but had seven birdies and no bogeys on Friday to launch himself into first place. He’s followed by Michael Thompson, who had entered the clubhouse with the lead at 8-under, and a pack of six players at 6-under. Of those, Boo Weekley, Branden Grace, and Graham DeLaet are still on the course. Notables include Lee Westwood at 6-under, Graeme McDowell at 5-under, and Dustin Johnson at 4-under.

The big drama left on the course Friday is whether or not Tiger Woods will make the cut. As of right now, he’s good, shooting even par for the second straight day, meaning he’d make the projected cut if he were to end his day now. But with ten holes left, he’ll have to be at even or better to ensure he’ll keep playing.
