After months of playing with an unpredictable point guard rotation, the Kings have decided to release Aaron Brooks.

Sacramento signed Brooks to a two-year, $6.64 million contract with a player option this past offseason after the Phoenix Suns withdrew their qualifying offer to the 27-year-old. Brooks battled with second-year player Isiah Thomas for minutes at the point guard position to start the season, peaking in December with averages 10.5 points and 3.6 assists per game. But Brooks has only seen action in three games since head coach Keith Smart announced that Jimmer Fredette had passed him in rotation on Feb. 5.
As Sactown Royalty points out, Friday marks the last day in which players can be released and still be eligible for the playoffs if they’re able to sign with another team. And with the Kings sitting at 20-39, they likely felt Brooks would be better off trying to land with a contender as the team finally begins to stick to their guns about developing their young players.
Brooks finishes his campaign with the Kings averaging eight points and 2.3 assists in 20.8 minutes played per game. While some will surely be interested in his services as a scoring threat off the bench, it’s worth noting that his points per game have steadily dropped each season since he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2010.
