Redskins rumors: Santana Moss, Adam Carriker could be released

The Washington Redskins have to free up cap space, and the team apparently views Santana Moss and Adam Carriker as expendable.

In an effort to free up salary cap space, the Washington Redskins are likely to release wide receiver Santana Moss and defensive end Adam Carriker, according to CBS Sports's Jason La Canfora.

The Redskins entered the 2013 offseason $3 million over the NFL’s salary cap, thanks to a $36 million penalty levied for contracts issued by the team in 2010. Moss is scheduled to inflict a $6.17 million dent in Washington’s cap next season, while Carriker is in line to cause a $4.75 million hit. Moss totaled 573 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012, while Carriker played in just two games due to a right knee injury.

The news of Moss’s and Carriker’s probable departures comes on the heels of Washington cutting ties with cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who was set to make around $8 million in 2013. The veteran cornerback had vocally offered to restructure his deal, but it appears Washington felt its only option was to release Hall. He compiled 95 tackles, 14 passes defended and four interceptions in 2012.
