Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Buccaneers ‘likely destination’ if traded

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have secondary issues, and Darrelle Revis could be a big help.

Rich Barnes-US PRESSWIRE

The trade rumors surrounding New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis have swirled for weeks, and a leading contender to land the four-time Pro Bowler has finally emerged. If Revis is traded, he will likely be sent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

Tampa Bay would certainly make sense as a possible destination for Revis. The Buccaneers' secondary was awful in 2012, and it needs an overhaul, especially at cornerback. Tampa Bay gave up an average of 297.4 passing yards per game last season, which ranked last in the NFL, and the Bucs allowed 30 passing touchdowns, fifth-most in the league. The secondary did manage to haul in 18 interceptions, which tied for eighth, but that could be because it faced 627 attempts, which was only topped by the Washington Redskins.

Revis is coming off an ACL injury, and he played just two games last year. Before the lost season, he was considered one of the best -- if not the best -- cornerbacks in the game. In 2011, he totaled 52 tackles, 21 passes defended and four interceptions. The Bucs would welcome his ability to shut down opposing receivers. However, if the Jets are looking for a first-round pick, New York may have unrealistic expectations in terms of compensation, per Florio:

At best, it’s a package headlined by a second-round pick this year or possibly a first-rounder in 2014. Under these circumstances, a 2013 first-round pick for Revis doesn’t make sense.

Tampa Bay may be the leader for Revis, but the Bucs aren’t the only suitors. The Jets have also been in discussions with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora. Philadelphia ranked ninth in the NFL in pass defense last season, but the team plans to release cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and is in transition under new head coach Chip Kelly.

The Atlanta Falcons were at one time rumored to be interested in Revis, but the team recently shot down that idea. The San Francisco 49ers have also been linked to Revis, but nothing concrete has come from those rumors.
