Prior to last night’s games, we presented five burning questions regarding the night’s action. Here are your cool, soothing answers.
1. Will the Columbus Blue Jackets extend their five-game winning streak?
The Blue Jackets gave the Vancouver Canucks their best effort, but the Canucks eked out a 2-1 shootout victory on Tuesday. Sergei Bobrovsky was outstanding again with 37 saves in a losing effort.
2. What kind of dynamic will the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins possess?
For awhile it looked like a typical shut-down defensive win from the Bruins, as they dominated the puck possession battle for a good part of the game. But by the end of the second period the Penguins had begun regaining momentum and it wasn’t long before their potent offense rallied to take a 3-2 win. So all-in-all the game was a good mix of both team’s best qualities.
3. How will Brent Burns fare as a forward?
Burns played a great game of hockey in his first game as a forward in the NHL, scoring a key goal in the Sharks’ loss. However, Fear The Fin says he can’t be moved back to defense quick enough:
Still, if it means excising Douglas Murray from the lineup, the Sharks should absolutely move Burns back to defense when the coaching staff judges him sufficiently healed. Niemi should have prevented the Porter goal from ever happening but Murray's patently awful gap control is what allowed Jackman to gain the zone in the first place. Martin Havlat is supposedly expected to return to the lineup for the home-and-home against Los Angeles and could potentially take Burns' spot.
4. Will the Washington Capitals defense falter due to injury?
Carolina scored four goals, so I'd say so. Braden Holtby was under fire most of the night with 35 shots against and the Capitals just looked sluggish on the back end. Washington was on quite the roll before getting bitten by the injury bug, and now they're in danger of falling back to the funk they started the season in.
5. How will Alexander Steen fare in his return?
Steen didn't play, but the Blues did lose T.J. Oshie to an injury. So there's that.
