Martin Brodeur injury: Devils goalie nearing return from back issue

Martin Brodeur returned to practice on Monday morning and believes he could return to game action this week.

USA TODAY Sports

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur returned to practice on Monday morning. Brodeur has missed 11 games due to an issue with his back.

The veteran goaltender told reporters following the practice session that he has been dealing with a pinched nerve, which originally acted up during warmups for New Jersey's game against the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 24. Brodeur last played on Feb. 21 when he backstopped the Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.

During Brodeur’s 11-game absence, the Devils have compiled a record of 3-6-2.

The 40-year-old goaltender has gone 12 games without a start, as backup Johan Hedberg was given the nod in the team's game against the Capitals on Feb. 23 one day before the injury acted up. Despite Brodeur's ability to return to practice, he said he would not be playing on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.

However, he believes he could make his return two nights later against the Carolina Hurricanes dependent upon how he feels.
