Getting a tattoo wasn’t something Kasey Kahne had thought of until the past year.
NASCAR Fontana 2013: Kasey Kahne gets tattoo with grandfathers’ initials
As a way to honor the memory of his grandfathers, Kasey Kahne had their initials tattooed on his left arm.
Wanting to commemorate his grandfathers, Richard Peterson and Kenny Kahne, the driver for Hendrick Motorsports decided to get their initials -- RDP and KSK -- tattooed on the upper inside portion of his left arm Thursday.
“I just kind of enjoy the part of good memories, lots of memories,” Kahne said Friday at Auto Club Speedway. “It’s just right there something I will see all the time now and think more about some of those memories.
“I’m glad I did it. I saw it this morning when I woke up and I was like ‘Man, I like that.’”
Kahne didn’t inform anyone about his decision, including his mom. But, after telling her, Kahne said the gesture “brought a little tear to her eye.”
“I told my mom I got it after I got it,” he said. “I didn’t really tell anyone else about it. I just kind of did it on my own quietly. I don’t know. I haven’t had too many people get mad or anything about it yet.
“I think that if it’s meaningful and something that you want to do, then go for it.”
The tattoo was done by Tim Hendricks, who has been featured on the TLC reality show “Miami Ink,” and the whole process took about 30 minutes. Kahne said he had pain for two hours afterward.
“It kind of just pulls,” Kahne said. “It’s like sharp and then it just pulls for 30 minutes or however long it took. Then probably the next two hours after that it stung a little more. Right now it just feels like a bit of a scab or something. It’s not a big deal.”
This was Kahne’s first tattoo and he is open to getting another in the future.
“I liked it, so who knows,” Kahne said. “For now though that is really it. ... I like what I did.”
