Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward is out six to eight weeks with a third-degree MCL sprain, the team announced on Monday.

The Carolina Hurricanes starting goaltender could miss the rest of the regular season after suffering an MCL injury on Sunday.

Ward was injured in the second period on Sunday in a collision with Florida Panthers forward Jack Skille and Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk. The collision sent Faulk flying into Ward and into the net and Ward would leave the game after having to be helped to the bench by teammates.
Dan Ellis, who did not start the game as scheduled after feeling ill, replaced Ward in net. The Hurricanes would beat the Panthers 3-2. Ward is 9-6-1 on the season with a 2.84 GAA and .908 save percentage.
The win was the third in a row for Carolina and increased the team’s lead in the Southeast Conference; the Hurricanes currently sit No. 3 in the Eastern Conference have used a surprisingly potent offense and relatively decent goaltending to be one of the surprise teams of the season under new coach Kirk Muller.
The Hurricanes will recall goaltender Justin Peters from the Charlotte Checkers to backup Ellis, who now likely becomes the starting goalie for Carolina for at least the next six weeks. There are just eight weeks remaining in the regular season.
