Josh Freeman’s agent has ‘really positive’ meeting with Buccaneers

Quarterback Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be on the road to a new contract.

USA TODAY Sports

Erik Burkhardt, agent for quarterback Josh Freeman, recently met with Tampa Bay Buccaneers officials, according to Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. Burkhardt was pleased with the meeting and seems to believe Freeman and the Buccaneers could be working toward a new deal.

“It was really positive,” Burkhardt said. “They said they definitely believe in Josh, that he is their guy, that they want to reach their goals with him and that they know he is capable of doing the job and are committed to him.”

Tampa Bay selected Freeman with the 17th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, and he won the starting job midway through his rookie season. In 2012, Freeman broke out, completing 54.8 percent of his passes for 4,065 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The yardage and touchdown numbers were the best of his four-year career, and the interceptions were the second-fewest in his time as a professional.

Freeman is entering the final year of a five-year, $26 million deal he signed as a rookie. Burkhardt did not specify if any talks of a new contract took place during his meeting with the Bucs, according to Cummings. However, the agent sounded confident in his client’s future in Tampa.

“This is a very important time in his career for Josh,” Burkhardt said. “He’s about to hit the prime of his career now and do some really special things and we just wanted the Bucs to know that Josh really wants to be there and be the franchise guy he has been and will continue to be.”
