NASCAR Las Vegas 2013: Rain cancels Cup qualifying, field set by owner points

Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski given pole position.

Rain canceled NASCAR qualifying Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the lineup for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 will be set primarily by 2012 owner points.

The rainout gives defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski the pole and he will start alongside Clint Bowyer, who finished second overall a year ago.

“It’s a really good deal,” Keselowski said. “I guess that’s one of the perks being the champion in the first few races. This is the first time I’ve ever had decent starting position from a rainout.”

Per the NASCAR rule book, the first 36 positions were set using car owner points from 2012 with the remainder of the field to be filled out by 2013 owner points and then by the number of qualifying attempts this season.

Mike Bliss was the only driver who failed to make the race.

Carl Edwards, who snapped a 70-race winless streak a week ago in Phoenix, will roll off the grid 16th.
