MAAC basketball tournament results and bracket: Siena, Fairfield advance to second round

The Siena Saints and the Fairfield Stags both won their first round game in the MAAC tournament.

The first round of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament is in the books; the Siena Saints and the Fairfield Stags will advance to the second round of the tournament.

The No. 9 Siena Saints won the opening game of the tournament, defeating the No. 8 Marist Red Foxes, 70-64. Marist junior forward Jay Bowie hit a three-point shot with 1:43 left in regulation to tie the game at 64-64, but Siena went on a 6-0 run to ice the game.

Senior forward O.D. Anosike led the Saints with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Rob Poole also had a strong performance, scoring 19 points while shooting 5-7 from beyond the arc.

Siena will face the No. 1 Niagara Purple Eagles at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Niagara swept the season series between the two teams.

The No. 7 Fairfield Stags also advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating the No. 10 St. Peter's Peacocks, 54-47. Fairfield trailed 46-44 with 5:46 left in the game, but went on a 10-1 run over the final five minutes to end the game.

Derek Needham was the only Stag in double figures, scoring 24 points on an 8-21 shooting performance.

Fairfield will face the No. 2 Rider Broncs in the second round at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Stags swept the season series against Rider, winning both games by ten points.
