London Marathon on as planned, security being reviewed

The next international marathon event will go on as planned.

The 2013 London Marathon will go on this coming Sunday “as originally scheduled” following the bombings at the Boston Marathon, race officials announced in a statement on Tuesday. British Sports High Minister Hugh Robertson said the event and those surrounding it “won’t be cowered” by the events in Boston and “pushing ahead” is the proper response.

Current security measures are being reviewed along the marathon’s route. Around 500,000 spectators and 37,500 runners are expected to be in attendance. After hosting the Olympics in 2012, London is familiar with security around a large-scale, international sporting event.

London Marathon Chief Executive Nick Bitel said: “The support we have been offered by our stakeholders, London Boroughs and the wider running community has been outstanding. We have the full support of the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor’s office and other authorities.

“We want to reassure our runners, spectators, volunteers and everyone connected with the event, that we are doing everything to ensure their safety and that the Virgin London Marathon 2013 is an outstanding success.”

Two explosions occurred on Monday at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The impact has left at least three people dead, with 17 others critically injured. A total of 176 people have been admitted to Boston-area hospitals with injuries related to the the bombings. Officials are still investigating the scene near Copley Square and no individuals have been taken into custody in connection to the incident.
