Boston Marathon bombing suspect taken into custody

The massive search for the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing finally came to a successful end Friday.

Following an extensive manhunt, police have captured the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing. After initially escaping capture following a confrontation Thursday night, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was taken into custody at roughly 8:45 p.m. ET on Friday.

Tsarnaev was caught in Watertown, Mass., after police were tipped off that he may be hiding in a boat located in the backyard of a home. A neighbor reportedly noticed a ladder against the boat that wasn’t previously there. Police were able to locate Tsarnaev using thermal imaging from a helicopter.

There was a brief firefight at the scene, followed by an extended waiting period before police were able to take Tsarnaev into custody. The process moved slowly as police operated cautiously in case Tsarnaev was armed with an explosive device. The end result was a successful capture without any additional casualties.

Friday’s arrest comes four days after Monday’s bombings and less than 24 hours after the two suspects were identified near MIT in Cambridge. Dzhokhar’s brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was taken into custody Thursday night before being pronounced dead at an area hospital a short time later.

While the two main suspects have been taken into custody, police continue to search the area for any potential explosive devices.
