Kentucky Derby 2013: Todd Pletcher puts Verrazano, 5 horses in the field

Can Todd Pletcher improve his abysmal standing at the Kentucky Derby?

Matthew Stockman

Todd Pletcher is considered one of horse racing’s greatest trainers, but the percentages have generally not been on his side. Pletcher has struggled to get his horses to not only win, but show or place either. In fact, they have often finished near the back of the pack, with six last place or next-to-last place finishes. Pletcher has had four horses finish in the top three in more than 30 trips. If not for Super Saver pulling through in 2010, Pletcher would be shut out in 31 tries at winning horse racing’s biggest prize.
However, Pletcher will have a bunch of horses in the running to win the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Five horses are in the running. Here’s a look at each one.
Verrazano: The potential favorite. Matt Gardner profiled Verrazano for SB Nation; the horse has started several times and gone undefeated in each race. Verrazano has improved each race, but will have to overcome the Curse of Apollo and become the first 2-year-old horse to win a race in over 130 years.
Revolutionary: Revolutionary is coming in on a hot streak having won its last three races. Although the horse is strong enough to handle the mile and a quarter distance, he will have to overcome a bit of history too, as no horse has won both the Louisiana and Kentucky Derbys since 1906.
Overanalyze: A versatile runner, Overanalyze has struggled with consistency issues at each point. Can he put it all together and win this race?
