Darrelle Revis rumors: Bucs-Jets trade would happen before NFL Draft

If Tampa Bay acquires Darrelle Revis, it won’t be as part of a draft day trade.

Rich Barnes-US PRESSWIRE

If the New York Jets agree to a trade that would send cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it will happen before the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Tony Pauline of draftinsider.net. The Bucs would want a chance to give Revis a physical, per Pauline.

It's no surprise the Jets would want a chance to give Revis a physical, considering the corner back is coming off severe knee injury. Revis played in just two games last season, tearing his right ACL during a 27-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 16. He finished the season with 11 tackles and one interception.

The Jets and Bucs have been rumored to be close to a trade for some time, but no deal has been made. Tampa Bay may be getting fed up with the Jets’ dragging their feet, according to Yahoo’s Jason Cole.

At this point, the Bucs or any other team interested in having Revis long-term may simply wait until he becomes a free agent in the offseason rather than trade for him. If that happens, the best return the Jets might get for Revis is a third-round compensatory pick. The team could wait until October to trade him, but would have to pay Revis the $3 million bonus and part of his $3 million base salary.

Revis has been considered to be the best cornerback in the NFL in recent years, but it remains to be seen how the knee injury will affect his play.
