JaMarcus Russell cancels own pro day workout

JaMarcus Russel’s attempted return to the NFL won’t include a pro day.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell has canceled his pro day and will work out for teams individually, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Russell had planned to workout Wednesday and was going to throw to Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. He hasn't played in an NFL game since 2009 and has had plenty of off-field issues during his time away from football. He was arrested for possession of codeine in July 2010, and he's been described as lazy by some NFL analysts. Despite all that, Russell is drawing interest from several teams.

The Raiders selected Russell with the first-overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft. In three years with Oakland, he completed 52.1 percent of his passes for 4,083 yards, 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He also fumbled 23 times, and the Raiders were just 7-17 in games he started.

Russell has reportedly slimmed down from 315 to 288 pounds, and if his workouts go well, it appears as if he’ll get a second chance to be an NFL signal-caller.
