Nike ushers in a new age of attack with Hypervenom boot

After eight generations of boots, Nike has decided to bid adieu to the Total 90 (later T90) moniker. Starting with the now-classic Air Zoom Total 90 and moving to the T90 Laser IV, Nike’s “power” boot has been a long-standing favorite for forwards and defenders alike.

Bright colors, asymmetrical lacing, and the Shot Shield have all become familiar features of the long-standing silo worn by the likes of Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge (among many others).

Now, Nike is set to scrap the famous T90 name in favor of moving the “power” segment into its next stage with a bright orange and black boot that they have dubbed the Hypervenom. The new boot is aimed for speedy attacking players that still want the power aspects in their footwear.

The Hypervenom features a revolutionary upper called NIKESKIN. It is made of a soft mesh that is bonded with a thin polyurethane film and coated in Nike’s (stellar) All Conditions Control technology. Nike Design Director, Denis Dekovic, commented on the new upper:

“Mesh delivers an amazing level of comfort and feel. The athletes asked us to deliver a boot that gets as close as possible to the feeling of playing barefoot. Mesh takes us a step closer to doing that and the All Conditions Control finish keeps the mesh dry.”

The Hypervenom also features a brand new outsole that aims to improve where the T90 left off. Three studs at the back reduce weight while a decoupled outsole “increases the player’s ability to make that important first step away from the defender.” The outsole is composed of compressed nylon for improved strength and reduced weight.

A number of the world's biggest names will be wearing the new Hypervenom next week, including Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Neymar, among others. Robert Lewandowski and Danny Welbeck are also set to wear the boot. It will officially debut on the field when England face Brazil on June 2. Nike have said that the boot will drop with a $225 price point.
