Kentucky Derby 2013: Post time, TV schedule, contenders and more

The 139th Kentucky Derby will be held Saturday. Will pre-race favorite Orb be able to capture Shug McGaughey’s first Kentucky Derby?

USA TODAY Sports

Churchill Downs will be the focus of the sports world on Saturday as the 139th running of the Kentucky Deby kicks off the latest quest for a Triple Crown.

The "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports" will headline the action from Churchill Downs, but the Kentucky Derby will be just one of a few notable races. The Derby will be the last of six stakes races on Saturday with post time scheduled for 6:24 p.m. ET. NBC and NBC Sports Network will combine for extensive television coverage. The undercard races will be available on NBC Sports Network from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Coverage will shift to NBC at 4 p.m. and continue with post-race coverage until 7 p.m. Viewers will also be able to watch the event online with live streaming available from NBC Sports Live Extra.

Orb opened as the money line favorite at 7/2, but he is one of three horses with 5/1 odds or better. Verrazano opened with 4/1 odds while Goldencents is third at 5/1. Orb, who drew post position 16, will attempt to get Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey his first Kentucky Derby Win. Verrazano avoided an inside post position and instead drew post 14, a good fit for his speed.

Revolutionary opened with 10/1 morning line odds, but is currently the favorite in a poll of And Down the Stretch They Come members. Track conditions could play a major factor in the 2013 Derby according to meteorologist Brian Deudorff.

My current weather forecast for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday is calling for cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. Rain showers possible Saturday morning with off and on showers into the afternoon and evening. This could make for a sloppy track instead of a fast dry track.
