Wise Dan, the 2012 American Horse of the Year, went to post as the odds-on 3/5 favorite and ran to every point of his odds as he rolled home to win the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic over Optimizer, Middie and Silver Max on the Kentucky Derby under card. Silver Max set the early fractions with Optimizer tracking him all the way around the course. Wise Dan was patiently ridden by jockey Jose Lezcano, never moving too early and waiting, waiting and waiting some more.

As the field entered the stretch drive, Lezcano let out the reins out a notch and Wise Dan responded by charging to the front of the field. Optimizer and Silver Max tried to fight back but the Horse of the Year was just too good to be denied at Churchill on this day.
Wise Dan is as six-year-old gelding by Wiseman’s Ferry out of a Wolf Power (SAF) mare (Lisa Danielle), ridden by Jose Lezcano and trained by Charles Lopresti. His victory in the Turf Classic was the fifth consecutive Grade 1 victory for Wise Dan. Yeah, he’s that good!
The Churchill Downs turf course was rated “Yielding” for the Turf Classic.
